A Musical Performer in the Spotlight: JON HAMMOND by Paul A. Hendrickson F3

A Musical Performer in the Spotlight: JON HAMMOND by Paul A. Hendrickson F3

One of the Musical Performers we get here at Laguna Honda is Jon Hammond. He has been playing here for quite a long time. He would mention in passing, between songs, some celebrities that are household names. It was done in such a way that it sounded as if he had met some of these people. Come to find out, he had.

After I got to talking to Jon, I realized that the polish he brings to his jazz piano and to Laguna Honda is no fluke. Jon resides mostly in New York City. He has a place in Times Square. In his neighborhood alone he met Paul Newman, Joanne woodward, and Al Pacino. He also has a Cable Access show there. On his Show he has interviewed people who he has found interesting. His favorite was Lionel Hampton, the reknowned vibe player. “At 80 years old, he was full of energy.”

Another he enjoyed had been Cab Calloway. This was after his re-emergence from the “Blues Brothers” movie. He mentions as one of his non-musician guests to be none other than Andy Warhol. It seems that Andy was interested in the computer Graphics and Artwork that jon and his crew used on the Show.

Though he plays a “jazz organ” on his CD’s and with his Band, Jon has been banging on the piano from about age six. When the Beatles came on the scene in ‘64, Jon with most others his age, decided to become a “Rock” star. He tried his hand at this. He had some groups ranging in name from “Hades” to “Contraband”. He becomes thoughtful at this moment. “‘Contraband’ was a pretty good band.” At age thirteen he got his first electric-accordion.

Jon has a small collection of accordions - mostly electric. He has inked a deal with Excelsior, and plays their accordions exclusively. He also notes that eBay the computer sales website is a good source if you know what you’re looking for. Jon mentions that he will be playing accordion for Broadway’s own “Fiddler on The Roof.” “Whenver I learn the book.” He says it is about as thick as a telephone book.

His latest group is made up of the “Late Rent Session Men”. As the name implies, whenever Jon is a little short and behind on his Rent, his landlord takes some music in trade.

Jon plays every month at Laguna Honda. Look for the fliers and catch his show. I asked him why someone who trots the globe makes such frequent stops at Laguna Honda Hospital. He says, “Well, my Father was a Physician. My Grandfather was a Physician. I’m a Musician. I like to see the people smile.” Jon does his “therapy” in another way. He hopes to be one of the first performers when they build the “New Hospital.” Happy New Year.

*Note: Special thanks, Paul A. Hendrickson, Jon

Ahmet Ertegun Eulogy To My Brother Nesuhi

Watch Video *Here:

From Jon Hammond N.Y., NY: I was honored to be invited to be with friends, family and Atlantic Records WEA and so many Musicians on this day in 1989 in Lincoln Center. I arrived with Bernard Purdie long-time Atlantic recording artist and we sat together amongst the Musicians, in concert were Modern Jazz Quartet, Roberta Flack, Phil Collins, Manhattan Transfer, Ron Carter, Sylvia Simms and at end after Ahmet's eulogy George Wein played a piano blues with Claude Nobbs on harmonica. Cocktail reception followed, it was somber but warm and joyful at the same time. Now Ahmet has passed RIP, he was always nice to me so I pass this on in their memory.
Sincerely,
Jon Hammond
http://www.HammondCast.com
*Ahmet Ertegun was "one of the most significant figures in the modern recording industry" who "co-founded Atlantic Records in 1947 with partner Herb Abramson. Atlantic was at the forefront of great independent labels that sprang up in the late Forties, challenging the primacy of the major labels of the time (RCA, Columbia and Decca) by discovering, developing and nurturing new talent. Under the guiding hand of Ertegun - the son of a career diplomat and a lifelong jazz and blues aficionado - Atlantic became the nation's premier rhythm & blues label in a few short years. The label's artist roster in the Fifties reads like an honor roll of R&B talent: Ruth Brown, Big Joe Turner, Ray Charles, LaVern Baker, the Drifters, the Coasters, the Clovers, and many more. During this period, Ertegun produced or coproduced the vast majority of records released on Atlantic. He even wrote songs for Atlantic artists in the early days using the pseudonym "Nugetre" (Ertegun spelled backwards). Though he was less directly involved as a producer, Ertegun continued at the helm of Atlantic in the Sixties and Seventies as the company conquered the realms of soul and rock, from Aretha Franklin to Led Zeppelin, with phenomenal success. Ertegun serves as chairman of Atlantic Records to this day. At the tenth annual Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Dinner in 1995, it was announced that the museum's main exhibition hall would be named after Ertegun." (quote from Museum)

Nesuhi Ertegun "spent most of his lifetime working at Atlantic Records and associated labels. He joined Atlantic in 1956, nine years after its founding by his brother Ahmet and Herb Abramson. Nesuhi initially developed Atlantic's album department and built up the label's extensive catalog of jazz long-players. The list of jazz artists he produced at Atlantic over the years reads like a who's who: John Coltrane, Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, the Modern Jazz Quartet and more. Nesuhi also became involved with the label's rhythm & blues and rock and roll roster as well, producing several hit records for Ray Charles, the Drifters, Bobby Darin and Roberta Flack. The son of a Turkish diplomat, Nesuhi acquired his taste for black music while growing up in Washington D.C., where he and Ahmet would frequent the Howard Theater and scour the community for records by their favorite musicians. In 1944, he moved to Los Angeles to run the Jazzman Record Shop. While there he created his own label, Crescent Records (later Jazzman), on which he recorded the likes of Kid Ory and Jelly Roll Morton. Nesuhi also served as editor of Record Changer magazine and taught the first accredited course in jazz offered in the U.S., at UCLA. In addition to founding the jazz division at Atlantic, Nesuhi later went on to spearhead the label's international operations, expanding the business and opening up new markets overseas. After the merger of the Warner Brothers, Elektra and Atlantic labels in 1971, he headed WEA International. He later oversaw the special projects division of Warner Communications and launched East/West, a Atlantic-distributed label, in 1988." (quote from Museum)

Google Maps Van Spotted by Jon Hammond on W. 44th St. NYC at 10:10 AM on 11/14/2007

I saw the Google Maps Van cruising up W. 44th St. between 8th and 9th Ave. at 10:10AM 11/14/2007. It has a highly interesting big black contraption on top of the van and a satellite antenna of some sort. The driver had an open laptop he was working as he was driving.

Watch Pictures *Here:

This morning I was #1 On THE LINE at the big T-Mobile Sidekick LX Release Event at San Francisco corporate store 8266 at 699 Market St. San Francisco. I bought a dark blue Sidekick LX which is now my 4th Sidekick since I got the very first one Oct. 8 2002. 106KMEL was on the scene with promotional prizes and the Kick It Promo Team, T-Mobile Corporate Execs. and Sales people...it was wild!

One thing I would like to mention about the Sidekick and T-Mobile is the great support of the Deaf and Hearing Impaired community with this device and the great T-Mobile customer service and product support. Right on T-Mobile!
Check out this great phone/data device, highly recommended by Jon Hammond of KYOU Radio 1550 AM HammondCast Early Edition Show 7 early-mornings a week. http://www.HammondCast.com

ENRICO BANDUCCI Dead - 1922-2007 Impressario of North Beach San Francisco

Visit WebTV Jon Hammond pages *Here:

I played Hammond organ at the El Cid Club for the topless shows in North Beach San Francisco at 606 Columbus Ave. 40 years ago so I was saddened to hear this morning that my old friend Enrico Banducci had passed away. We all would end up after hours at Enrico's, the topless dancers and musicians to eat Italian food and hang out under the element heaters sitting al fresco at 3AM to see and be seen.
Enrico of course the flamboyant character who would come by our tables and play his violin and tell stories. He started the whole scene during SF's Beatnik and Bohemian days with the hungry i, where Barbra Streisand, Woody Allen, Mort Sahl and Bill Cosby, among others, got their starts. Everybody loved Enrico, he was very generous and if you were short dough on the check he would always take an IOU until pay day.
I always saw Big Daddy Tom Donahue the great radio broadcaster there, The Beau Brummels and SF's gliteratti.

Later around 1980 when the Punk Rock scene was raging across the street at MABUHAY GARDENS 443 Broadway, all the Punkers would come over to Enrico's too, the place was always Rockin'...RIP Enrico Banducci ! Let me know if you hear about his funeral or memorial event. Jon Hammond organ player/radio broadcaster

Moscow Concert Hammond Butman

Watch Video *Here:

Most of the day I stayed in the room practicing my instrument and looking out at Red Square. Jennifer and I wanted to get to the club early so that we could get a sound check and settle in. Faina picked us up and we stuffed my organ and all our equipment in her compact car and off we went to Le Club in the Taganka Theatre Building. When we arrived the big friendly doormen picked up my heavy cases like they were toothpicks and brought them up the stairs for me! Vladimir the sound engineer for the club was very smooth and professional, and a very nice guy. We got a good sound on the organ and then came Eduard Zizak the great drummer! I had already met Eduard in New York the week before when he was there performing with Igor's quartet at Birdland. Eduard is an incredible drummer and also a very nice guy. We made a little soundcheck and right away I could tell that he had listened to my music and we would lock up with some very tight grooves...no problem! But where was Igor?...Click above Link to find out!

Blues In The Moscow White Nights - Jon Hammond Trio Russia Concerts with Igor Butman Story

Read Story with Pictures *Here:

The story of my first concerts in Russia with Igor Butman (sax), Eduard Zizak (drums) by organist Jon Hammond (USA) for Jazz Quad

Coming to Russia to play in concert together with Igor Butman and Eduard Zizak recently, was one of the greatest experiences in my life/career! I was highly anticipating this journey for many reasons. First of all since my family originally came from Russia and Latvia many years ago, I had heard so many stories as a young child about the land and people I was about to visit. My grandparents were never able to return to Russia but when I arrived it felt like I was coming home.

From the beginning of my preparations I could see that this was not going to be any ordinary music tour! From obtaining visas it was apparent that the procedure was slightly different. I traveled with my girlfriend Jennifer on British Airways departing JFK to London and then from there we changed planes to Moscow. Upon arriving at Moscow SVO airport we quickly found ourselves among 20 persons who arrived with no baggage. There was nobody there to speak in English with from BA, so we had an interesting conversation and procedure with the official Lost and Found desk there and filled out the Baggage Irregularity Report papers. Leaving the customs area without our baggage we were very happy when we stepped out and saw a nice man holding a big Jon Hammond poster. We knew this was our man!
Luckily we came 2 days before the concerts and our bags were finally found and delivered to our hotel the next day. *continued from Link...
