Letter from Jon Hammond Member AF of M Local 6 Musicians Union San Francisco, Subject: permit for the summer of Love 50th - June 4th 2017 in Golden Gate Park Commissioner Mark Buell, President Commissioner Allan Low, Vice President Commissioner Kat Anderson Commissioner Gloria Bonilla Commissioner Tom Harrison Commissioner Eric McDonnell

Dear San Francisco City Hall Commissioners and Permit Management Team: It has come to my attention that the permit for the free concert event in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love produced by Boots Hughston has just been denied on the grounds that it could put the public at risk. I would like to vouch for Mr. Hughston’s m.o. in organizing and handling security and all aspects of a large public concert event as a member in good standing of our Local 6 Musicians Union of San Francisco. Boots Hughston has already demonstrated that he can do this event safely, his team is well coordinated and experienced - I attended the 40th Anniversary of Summer of Love and it came off without a hitch - it was totally peaceful and everybody pitched in and cleaned up afterwards - fun for all ages, a real Family Event you could attend with your own children without any fear. This is an important part of the legacy of San Francisco - I have toured all over the world and everybody I meet who has never been to San Francisco tells me that they want to come to San Francisco and ‘wear flowers in their hair’ - this is one of the things that as City Administrators you should be greatly proud of and by all means support at the highest levels of the City and County of San Francisco, no doubt about it. We are lucky that many of the original musicians and participants in the original Summer of Love are still alive and have agreed to participate in the enactment of this 50th Anniversary of Summer of Love - free of charge, by and for the People. Please kindly reconsider your revocation of the permit and move forward to allow this very special event to take place on the appointed day of June 4th 2017, which has already been marked down on many calendars. Sincerely, Jon Hammond Member AF of M Local 6 Musicians Union of San Francisco #ActualSetList from 40th Anniversary Summer Of Love West Fest backstage photo taken by Jon Hammond: Member AF of M Local 6 Musicians Union San Francisco, Subject: permit for the summer of Love 50th - June 4th 2017 in Golden Gate Park Commissioner Mark Buell, President Commissioner Allan Low, Vice President Commissioner Kat Anderson Commissioner Gloria Bonilla Commissioner Tom Harrison Commissioner Eric McDonnell "We will file an appeal and refute all the allegations presented at the Park Commission meeting on Feb 16th in Room 416 at 10am, City Hall. He was 84. Mr. Polte had been suffering from multiple health problems and had been under Hospice care since May, said his wife of 20 years, Sally Robert. “He was a good man,” said Quicksilver band member David Freiberg, speaking by phone from Florida while on tour with the Jefferson Starship. “I could always trust him to do what he thought was right.” Born on the south side of Chicago into a family of nine children, Mr. Polte had a tough childhood, but managed to turn his life around after being in and out of trouble with the law as a teenager, his wife said. In Chicago, he became friends with blues singer-songwriter Nick Gravenites (“Born in Chicago,” “Buried Alive in the Blues”) when they were teenagers and followed him out to San Francisco in the early 1960s. They were the first of the Chicago blues crowd, including Mike Bloomfield, Elvin Bishop and Mark Naftalin of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, to relocate in the Bay Area, most of them settling in Marin and Sonoma counties. In 1967, Mr. Polte took over management of Quicksilver and the Ace of Cups after their original manager, Ambrose Hollingworth, was seriously injured in a car crash near Muir Beach. “When we needed somebody, there he was,” Freiberg said. Quicksilver was the last of the San Francisco hippie bands to ink a major label deal when they signed with Capitol Records in late 1967. “He took it slow and steady and wouldn’t take a deal if he didn’t think it was right,” Freiberg recalled. “It took a while, but we got a really good deal with Capitol.” Mr. Polte was known as a dutiful and resourceful manager who did what he could to meet the needs of the young musicians in his bands. Freiberg remembered that when he and his Quicksilver bandmates were living together in a house in Mill Valley, they informed him of their desire to move onto a farm in the country with a barn where they could rehearse. Mr. Polte wasted no time making that wish come true. “Within a week and a half, we were living on an old dairy farm in Olema,” Freiberg recalled, chuckling. “He really cared about making sure everybody was taken care of.” Diane Vitalich of Novato, drummer for the Ace of Cups, recalled that when she and her bandmates needed transportation, Mr. Polte went to an auction of state vehicles at San Quentin and bought cars for all of them. “He bought us five 1963 Dodge Darts,” she said. “They were all blue and all looked the same.” During this time, Mr. Polte started Westpole, a booking agency that handled Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, the Sons of Champlin and other seminal Bay Area rock groups. He’s also credited with inspiring the name of the band Electric Flag, a short-lived supergroup formed by Bloomfield, Gravenites, keyboardist Barry Goldberg, bassist Harvey Brooks and drummer Buddy Miles. According to Gravenites, Quicksilver had somehow come into possession of a light-up electric flag after a gig at a veterans hall. “He brought it over to where we were all living and rehearsing in Tam Valley,” he recalled. “We plugged it in and it lit up and started waving. We said, ‘Hey, look at that. Let’s call ourselves the Electric Flag.’” Eventually, Mr. Polte escaped from the hard living and tumult of the music business, spending time on a remote lodge in the New Mexico wilderness owned by Frank Werber, the charismatic manager of the Kingston Trio and owner of the Trident, a legendary Sausalito restaurant. Through it all, he never lost the values that defined the ‘60s generation in San Francisco. “All the altruistic thinking that came out of that era he agreed with a thousand percent,” Gravenites said. “He remained a firm defender of all the idealism from those years.” In addition to his wife, Mr. Polte is survived by two daughters, Pamela Polte of Sutter Creek, Amador County, and Patti Ann Lindecker of Chicago; two sons, Thomas Polte of Chicago and Jeremy Polte of Dunsmuir, Siskiyou County, and two sisters, Marilyn McMinn and Nancy Brunanchon of Pine Grove, Amador County. A private memorial service is being planned. Donahue believes that even though the concert never happened, this was a positive experience for the San Francisco community. He states that: "We also felt that a great deal of the good things that have come out of the artistic community in this country have originated in San Francisco. That it's a starting point. Thay may sound chauvanistic but I also think it's the truth." Ends with brief comments from another spokesman, who refers to the "unecessary and ... unwarranted paranoia" that the Wild West project had to deal with. It is worth noting that Donahue was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as a non-peformer, one of only three disc jockeys to receive that honor to date (2011). I will let my accomplishments speak for themselves. We’ve never had any problems with events we’ve produced; our production is tight, well oiled and very professional. Our production teams are the best in the industry and have pulled off the impossible many times such as having 21 bands and 17 speakers in 7 hours – with no performers being late. There are very few production companies in the industry able to accomplish this. The amazing thing is it’s done by volunteers’, professional people in the industry volunteering their time and expertise. Even the artists and musicians donate their services; no one gets paid - not even me. Because we are volunteers does not mean we are incompetent. We choose to be a part of this event, we do it out of love for our culture and the principles this event stands for Peace, Love, and Compassion. Now, if I had no creditability do you think musicians would play for free? Or the production people would work for free?, Believe me they wouldn’t. It is precisely the opposite; they want to be a part of this event because I have creditability and they respect the event and its history. All the people donate their services because they know our events are produced and managed professionally and above all are peaceful. My background as a promoter goes back many years - do you think I would mislead the Permits people or the Police Department? I would not, those are amateur promoter mistakes. They have taken statements out of context and twisted the meaning to benefit their own purpose. We will present our appeal this Thursday at 10am in RM 416 at city Hall. Please attend we need your help and participation. We will show documents proving I filed the Department of Emergency Services plan on time; we have Rock Med handling medical and they will refute the Parks statements. We also have email exchanges showing the statements they have taken out of context. Do not believe their slanderous statements. The question is Why: The parks have become a cash cow for the city and they don’t want events like ours – they want it to be corporate. They receive millions of dollars from fees charged; Outlands paid 3M dollars. They are ignoring non-profit groups like ours. They forget the Golden Gate Park and the Parks system is for citizens of San Francisco not for corporations to make money. It is important we honor our culture; the world sees this event and San Francisco as where a positive change came over our cultures, where creativity and spirituality became more important than money. This event gives us the opportunity to come together as one, in harmony showing the world we can unite under the banner of peace while respecting Mother Nature and our Earth. This event is seen around the world as the spear head of cultural change and represents San Francisco in a positive light internationally. Our last event had thousands of international press writing about San Francisco. It would be smart for the city to embrace this event not only to allow the permits to go forward, but take this event under its wing making it a reoccurring celebration of San Francisco and its Citizens. He was best known for his 1981 album Breakin' Away and for singing the theme song of the late-1980s television series Moonlighting. Jarreau was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the fifth of six children. His website refers to Reservoir Avenue, the name of the street where he lived. His father was a Seventh-day Adventist Church minister and singer, and his mother was a church pianist. He and his family sang together in church concerts and in benefits, and he and his mother performed at PTA meetings.[2] He was student council president and Badger Boys State delegate for Lincoln High School. At Boys State, Jarreau, was elected governor.[3] He went on to attend Ripon College, where he also sang with a group called the Indigos. Jarreau graduated in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology.[1] He went on to earn a master's degree in vocational rehabilitation from the University of Iowa, worked as a rehabilitation counselor in San Francisco, and moonlighted with a jazz trio headed by George Duke. In 1967, he joined forces with acoustic guitarist Julio Martinez.[1] The duo became the star attraction at a small Sausalito night club called Gatsby's. This success contributed to Jarreau's decision to make professional singing his life and full-time career. Going full-time[edit] Al Jarreau in Wrocław, Poland; June 25, 2006 Al Jarreau headlining "Jazz in Kiev 2008" festival In 1968, Jarreau made jazz his primary occupation. In 1969, Jarreau and Martinez headed south, where Jarreau appeared in such Los Angeles hot spots as Dino's, The Troubadour, and Bitter End West. Television exposure came from Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin, Dinah Shore, and David Frost. He expanded his nightclub appearances performing at The Improv between the acts of such rising-star comics as Bette Midler, Jimmie Walker, and John Belushi. During this period, he became involved with the United Church of Religious Science and the Church of Scientology, but he later dissociated from Scientology. Also, roughly at the same time, he began writing his own lyrics, finding that his Christian spirituality began to influence his work. In 1975, Jarreau was working with pianist Tom Canning when he was spotted by Warner Bros. Records. On Valentine's Day 1976 he sang on the 13th episode of NBC's new Saturday Night Live hosted, that week, by Peter Boyle (Young Frankenstein, Everybody Loves Raymond). Soon thereafter he released his critically acclaimed debut album, We Got By, which catapulted him to international fame and garnered him a German Grammy Award. A second German Grammy would follow with the release of his second album, Glow. One of Jarreau's most commercially successful albums is Breakin' Away (1981), which includes the hit song "We're in This Love Together". In 1984, his single "After All" reached 69 on the US Hot 100 chart and number 26 on the R&B chart. It was especially popular in the Philippines. His last big hit was the Grammy-nominated theme to the 1980s American television show Moonlighting, for which he wrote the lyrics. Among other things, he was well known for his extensive use of scat singing, and vocal percussion. He was also a featured vocalist on USA for Africa's "We Are the World" in which he sang the line, "...and so we all must lend a helping hand." Another charitable media event, HBO's Comic Relief, featured Al in a duet with Natalie Cole singing the song "Mr. President", written by Joe Sterling, Mike Loveless and Ray Reach. Jarreau took an extended break from recording in the 1990s. As he explained in an interview with Jazz Review: "I was still touring, in fact, I toured more than I ever had in the past, so I kept in touch with my audience. I got my symphony program under way, which included my music and that of other people too, and I performed on the Broadway production of Grease. I was busier than ever! For the most part, I was doing what I have always done … perform live. I was shopping for a record deal and was letting people know that there is a new album coming. I was just waiting for the right label (Verve), but I toured more than ever."[4] In 2003, Jarreau and conductor Larry Baird collaborated on symphony shows around the United States, with Baird arranging additional orchestral material for Jarreau's shows. He toured and performed with Joe Sample, Chick Corea, Kathleen Battle, Miles Davis, David Sanborn,[5] Rick Braun, and George Benson. He also performed the role of the Teen Angel in a 1996 Broadway production of Grease. On March 6, 2001, he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, at 7083 Hollywood Boulevard on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and La Brea Avenue. In 2006, Al Jarreau appeared in a duet with American Idol finalist Paris Bennett during the Season 5 finale and on Celebrity Duets singing with actor Cheech Marin. In 2010, Al Jarreau was a guest on the new Eumir Deodato album, with the song "Double Face" written by Nicolosi/Deodato/Al Jarreau. The song was produced by the Italian company Nicolosi Productions. On February 16, 2012, he was invited to the famous Italian Festival di Sanremo to sing with the Italian group Matia Bazar. On February 8, 2017, after being hospitalized for exhaustion, he cancelled his remaining 2017 tour dates and retired from touring.[6] Personal life Jarreau was married twice. His first marriage, to Phyllis Hall, lasted from 1964 to 1968. His second wife was model Susan Elaine Player, whom he married in 1977. Jarreau and Player had one son together, Ryan. It was reported on July 23, 2010 that Jarreau was critically ill at a hospital in France, while in the area to perform a concert at nearby Barcelonnette, and was being treated for respiratory problems and cardiac arrhythmias.[7] He was taken to the intensive-care unit at Gap late on July 22, 2010.[8] Jarreau was conscious, in a stable condition and in the cardiology unit of La Timone hospital in Marseille, the Marseille Hospital Authority said. He was expected to remain there for about a week for tests.[9] In June 2012, Jarreau was diagnosed with pneumonia, which caused him to cancel several concerts in France.[10] Jarreau made a full recovery and continued to tour extensively until February 2017.[11][12] In 2009 children's author Carmen Rubin published the story Ashti Meets Birdman Al, inspired by the music of Al Jarreau. He wrote the foreword for the book and read from it across the world. Al and Carmen worked together to promote literacy and the importance of keeping music alive in children. Death[edit] Al Jarreau suffered pneumonia and some effective seizures and was hospitalized. He died on February 12, 2017 at the age of 76. "It's not joining the Elks or the Moose Lodge or something, but it is a fraternity/sorority... People helping and coming together. A lot of this was formed by Gregg. If you needed help, Gregg was there to help," said Scott May, organist for the Ides of March and project manager/artist liaison for Hammond USA. "That selflessness and brotherhood became the order of the day, and it's been wonderful to have that with so many artists and so many big names. It started with Gregg, and now we perpetuate. More than 20 Hammond artists will come to together Wednesday, Feb. 22 at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles for the sixth annual Hammond Sound Soul Summit. The concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m., features musicians from across the genres including rock, jazz, pop, Gospel and more. During this year's Summit - the first time the event is held in the Chicago area - they will celebrate the life of Gregg Gronowski, Hammond USA's director of sales and marketing. Gronowski, who is credited with helping to create the family-like relationship among the Hammond musicians that's affectionately dubbed "HamFam," died in August 2016 following a massive stroke. All proceeds from the concert will benefit Gronowski's family. "He was a great guy, a special guy. He's brought together this Hammond family," said Robby Robinson, longtime music director for Frankie Valli. "He was kind of the Papa Bear of the HamFam. All of this Hammond organ people have this affinity and brotherhood so to speak, that it really is kind of a family. It's really special, and I'm so blessed to be a part of it." The night of music features what May calls "an unprecedented lineup" of Hammond musicians across a variety of musical genres. "You don't get to see these artists together in one place. You'll never see Mark Stein from Vanilla Fudge and Dr. Lonnie Smith together in the same show," May said. "You'll never see some of the Gospel artists and some of the rock artists together in the same show. It demonstrates the depth of Hammond family and the camaraderie we have." Among those performing are jazz legend Dr. Lonnie Smith, Mark Stein of Vanilla Fudge, Emiko, Rev. Jimmie Smith, Red Young of Eric Burdon's The Animals, Kevin McKendree of the Brian Setzer and Delbert McClinton bands, Yates McKendree, former Tower of Power musician Ellis Hall, Kim Tibbs, Jon Hammond, Jim Afredson, Tommy Leershen, Justin Dillard, Anthony Williams of the Bobby Jones Gospel TV show, Marine LaCoste of Uncle Kracker, Gary Swan from Etta James' band, Steven Eaklor, Peter Gallinari of Leslie West's and Richie Scarlett's bands and Jim Kozak. Also performing is May with the Ides of March featuring Jim Peterik, as well as Robinson with members of the Jersey Boys cast. "We're going to do a medley of Frankie Valli songs," Robinson said. "I've been living those songs for ever and ever. " During the Summit, musical equipment donated by Addison-based Hammond – including an organ – will be raffled, with those proceeds also going to Gronowski's family. "Gregg was very, very special to the company. He wasn't a keyboard player, he was a bass player by trade," May said. "He learned a lot about the instrument and did a lot to bring the company up to a modern level." Robinson said Gronowski was a genuinely warm person who connected with everyone, and that he had a real passion for music and the Hammond organ. That passion for Hammond is something Robinson shares. "I've been playing Hammond since the 60s. I own eight Hammond organs," said Robinson, who is also a composer and producer. What is it about the instrument that inspires such devotion? "There is no other organ in pop music or rock music or Gospel music that has become the standard bearer for the instrument in any of those genres. It just doesn't happen," Robinson said. "It's a one of a kind instrument. It's hard to quantify exactly … but there's no doubt that anybody who is Hammond organ player has a love affair with the instrument. "I love to play piano but when I sit down at the Hammond organ, it's the most fun thing I do in music," he said. "There's a special connection that I cannot articulate what it is, because it's such an emotional experience that it's hard to define it. But it is consistent and it is real." And during the Sound Soul Summit, audience members will have a chance to share that experience when the artists perform. "Guitarists get all the press. Everybody loves guitar players. They get all the press and all the action. The keyboard players kind of sit back," May said. "Now this is time for the keyboard players to step to the front of the stage and shine."
