Hammond Report August 10 2020 From Pandemic Quarantino Jon Hammond

Hammond Report August 10 2020 from Pandemic Quarantino Jon Hammond - Daily Music and Stories from organist & accordionist Jon Hammond, Breaking News folks - in-person 2021 NAMM Show just canceled! Yikes!! We'll see us online for "Believe in Music" virtual NAMM - today's story in good old Mikell's 31 years ago on a hot July night 28th of July 1989, the first time we performed original composition 'White Onions' with Jon Hammond and The Late Rent Session Men, Alex Foster tenor,Chuggy Carter congas and percussion, Bernard Purdie drums, Barry Finnerty guitar and yours truly Jon Hammond at my 1959 Hammond B3 organ. This was the trĂ©s hip scene where all the studio musicians and luminaries gathered for 31 years until 1991 - this night Hugh Masakela hung out with us all night long. Whitney Houston used to perform there with her Mom Cissy Houston. Wynton Marsalis got his break there when he sat in with Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers and became a Messenger. And of course the band Stuff, who backed up Paul Simon & Joe Cocker often played in Mikell's - thanks to Pat Mikell and the late great Mike Mikell! Stay safe out there everybody, I'll be back tomorrow with another Hammond Report - Jon Hammond - Jon Hammond Band - thanks Joe Berger for operating my PV-430D camera!

"The Jon Hammond Show" is a funky, swinging Jazz instrumental revue, featuring notable international soloists and reflecting the influences of Miles Davis, The Crusaders and Jimmy Smith. http://www.HammondCast.com Programm: "Organ meets Bigband" Leitung: Michael Leuschner Samstag, d. 01.08.2015, 20:30 Klostergarten Rostock Producer Jon Hammond Language English Facebook video https://www.facebook.com/jonhammondband/videos/vb.133709526657853/1105371389491657/?type=3&theater Youtube https://youtu.be/gX-6UczeyII Circa July 28 1989, Mikell's, 760 Columbus Ave., Studio Musicians, Blues, Jazz, #BernardPurdie #HammondOrgan #JonHammond

Run by Mike Mikell[1] and Pat Mikell, from 1969 to 1991 it was a regular venue for New York's top studio and session musicians, who would turn up for jam sessions with major soul, funk and jazz artists visiting the city.[2] Paul Shaffer, bandleader for CBS's Late Show with David Letterman, called Mikell's "soul heaven".[2] Among the performers and bands associated with Mikell’s are Stuff, the alliance of studio musicians that played almost weekly at Mikell's in the 1970s.[2] Writer James Baldwin's brother David worked as a bartender at the club, thereby attracting patronage from Baldwin as well as other authors, including Toni Morrison, Amiri Baraka and Maya Angelou. Stephane Grappelli, French jazz violinist who co-founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France, performed at Mikell's in the mid-1970s. The band Stuff, formed in 1974, was closely associated with Mikell's, playing there three nights a week until 1980, with jam sessions taking place with visiting soul, jazz and funk stars and singers such as Stevie Wonder and Joe Cocker. In early 1980, the club served for rehearsals for Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Big Band, which included Wynton Marsalis, and which would result in the live album Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers Big Band - Live at Montreux and North Sea (1980).[3] Other artists appearing at the club in the 1980s included Milt Jackson, Ray Brown, Cedar Walton and Mickey Roker (June 1983[4]), Paquito D'Rivera (January 1984[5]). Mikell's closed in 1991. *WATCH THE VIDEO HERE: 802 Early Birds Monday Night Jazz Session HD 1080p Jon's Archive http://archive.org/details/JonHammond802EarlyBirdsMondayNightJazzSessionHD1080p This video takes place in the Local 802 Musicians Union New York City with organist Jon Hammond and Richard Clements at the piano. Kasdan Jr. Last year San Francisco-based organist Jon Hammond joined his buddy, Louisville guitarist John Bishop, for a night at the Jazz Factory. Hammond has just released Late Rent, on Ham-Berger-Friz Records, available at http://www.cityhallrecords.com/artist/HAMMOND,%20JON.htm if you can't find it locally. In an e-mail to me, Hammond described this as "a record that took me 25 years to put together. The disc opens with "Late Rent," a loping swinger and is followed by "Pocket Funk," with a slightly Latin feel. "Late Rent" is reprised in a live take at the end of the CD. Lee Morgan's funky "The Sidewinder" is the only cover tune on the album, although, as Hammond acknowledges in his liner notes, "White Onions" is "a bluesy Hammond/Finnerty composition reminiscent of `Green Onions.'" In closing, happy holidaze to one and all.
